A Matched Set

I found a chair!
I had just finished painting a thrift store desk
and was on the lookout for a chair to go with it.
As I was digging out and cleaning up our basement
I came across this chair that I bought a few
years ago at a thrift store for $4.00.
This chair was the very first piece of furniture I ever painted.
It used to sit in a corner of our dining room with a plant on it
but got moved to the basement when we did a little update in
our dining room. I completely forgot about it.

Out came the paintbrush again to give this little chair
a new look and purpose.

It's the perfect match for my newly painted thrift store desk.
This was one time cleaning out the basement was a good thing.
You never know what you will come across.
That's it for this week.

A Vintage Desk Makeover

I was on the hunt for a small desk to
place in our lower level family room.
As I was dropping off a few things
at our local Goodwill store I thought
I would take a quick look inside to see
if anything caught my attention.
I spotted this vintage desk that was exactly what I had been looking for.
Not only was it the perfect desk, it was for sale for $9.99!
So it came home with me.😊
It was in need of a new paint job.

Because the paint job was so poorly done,
thickly applied in some areas, while other areas
had a thin layer, I decided to completely sand it down.
After 2 days of sanding and 6 sheets of sand paper I was ready to paint.

The weather finally turned nice enough that
I was able to set up my paint tent and paint outside.
I decided to keep the original handles
and give them a new look too.
I used Rub 'N Buff in Gold leaf.

Betcha can't guess what color I painted it.
Are you ready for the reveal?

BEFORE
O.k., here goes.

AFTER
Ha, Did I fool ya!
Did you guess I was going to paint it white?
The color is called Blue Nose by Benjamin Moore.
It is a beautiful blue gray color, although the picture
shows it as a brighter blue.
When it comes to adding color into our home
I tend to always lean toward the color blue.

Here is a true fun fact.
Did you know that blue is the world's favorite color?
No.
Me, either.
I can see why though.
Blue is considered a neutral color.
It plays nicely with all colors.

I always get my paints mixed at Home Depot
using this brand as my base.
One coat of this paint completely covered the desk nicely.
I wanted a little contrast so I stained the top
with Minwax Special Walnut.
I thought about using my spray paint gun to paint it,
but in the end I decided to paint it with a brush.
It only took me about 1 hour to paint it.
I let the paint dry overnight then applied
1 layer of clear satin polycrylic to seal it.
The top received 2 layers of stain and
2 layers of clear satin polycrylic.
A couple of close up shots.

Here is the side by side comparison shot.
I'd call that a good $10.00 investment.
I love how this desk turned out.
Now I have to find a chair to go with it.

That's it for this week.

Meshing Styles

It's finally time to reveal the new look
in our dining room.
This room has changed a few times since
we moved into this home 17 years ago.
I have always been drawn to a classic refined style.
Although Hubby liked the classic refined style he also
wanted a little bit of country/rustic thrown in.
I've always struggled trying to mesh our styles
together to get a look that pleased both myself and Hubby,
that was until Pinterest entered into my life. For a long
time I refused to look at Pinterest. I already had enough
obsessions I didn't need anymore. Thank goodness I changed
my thinking. Pinterest taught me how to mesh mine and
Hubby's styles together to achieve a style that pleased both of us.

Before I show you the current look of our dining room
let me share a few pictures of how the dining room used to look.
I had to really dig through old photos to find a picture of
how our dining room first looked when we moved in.
After we gave our dining room set to our Son and removed
the wallpaper the dining room looked like this.

I had no intentions of changing this room
any time soon but time always has a way of changing all things.
The new look for the dining room all started with this dresser
and DIY abstract art picture which started a snowball effect.

Next, I moved this stand from the kitchen
to the dining room and restyled it to help balance out the room.

Add a new table, chairs, chandelier and rug and we have
a dining room that pleases both Hubby and myself.
Welcome to our new dining room.

Looking toward the living room.

This room portrays our perfect mesh of styles,
not too feminine and not too masculine.
Just like Goldilocks and the 3 bears.
 It's just right.😊

A view from the living room.

Another view from the living room looking toward the kitchen.

Did you notice how the rug pulls the whole room together?
A view from the kitchen.

A perfect mesh of rustic and refined.
I hoped you enjoyed this little glimpse into our home
and I was able to show you that you can mix many different
styles to create a style that is just right for you.
Who says you have to follow what the designers say is right?
No matter what your style or styles are, fill your
home with what makes YOU happy.

That's it for this week.

A Touch of the Blues

Time to reveal the final addition
to our dining room.

Whenever I start to design a room,
I like to start with neutral colors like
whites, creams, beige and
greige (a color between beige and gray).
The reason I like to work with
these colors as a base color is because
they co-ordinate with every color.
Once you have your biggest pieces,
or areas in your base colors
it's easy to add little
touches of other colors into the mix.

Our dining room had a lot of neutral colors
and different shades of wood going on.
It needed a little touch of color to balance
and pull the room together.
To accomplish it I chose this vintage look rug
with touches of cream, brown, beige and blues.
These are all the colors that are scattered around our dining room.
Even though the chair legs and table are different colors
this rug blends them together to give them a cohesive look.
This rug is super soft on the feet too.

A little color goes a long way.

That's it for this week.
Check back next week to see the final reveal of this room.

Until Next Time,
Veronica
